The act of living in Zimbabwe is something of a risk at the moment, so you may imagine that there might be little appetite for supporting Zimbabwe’s gambling dens. In fact, it seems to be working the other way, with the critical economic circumstances leading to a bigger desire to wager, to try and find a fast win, a way out of the problems.

For many of the locals surviving on the tiny local wages, there are 2 established types of gaming, the state lottery and Zimbet. As with almost everywhere else in the world, there is a state lottery where the probabilities of hitting are remarkably tiny, but then the jackpots are also unbelievably big. It’s been said by financial experts who look at the subject that the lion’s share do not purchase a card with a real assumption of hitting. Zimbet is centered on either the local or the UK football divisions and involves determining the results of future games.

Zimbabwe’s gambling halls, on the other foot, cater to the very rich of the country and tourists. Up until recently, there was a very large sightseeing industry, based on safaris and trips to Victoria Falls. The economic collapse and connected conflict have carved into this market.

Amongst Zimbabwe’s casinos, there are two in the capital, Harare, the Carribea Bay Resort and Casino, which has 5 gaming tables and one armed bandits, and the Plumtree gambling hall, which has just the slots. The Zambesi Valley Hotel and Entertainment Center in Kariba also has just one armed bandits. Mutare has the Monclair Hotel and Casino and the Leopard Rock Hotel and Casino, the pair of which have table games, one armed bandits and video poker machines, and Victoria Falls has the Elephant Hills Hotel and Casino and the Makasa Sun Hotel and Casino, the two of which have gaming machines and blackjack, roulette, and craps tables.

In addition to Zimbabwe’s casinos and the aforementioned alluded to lottery and Zimbet (which is quite like a pools system), there are a total of two horse racing tracks in the country: the Matabeleland Turf Club in Bulawayo (the second city) and the Borrowdale Park in Harare.

Given that the economy has contracted by more than 40 percent in the past few years and with the connected deprivation and bloodshed that has resulted, it is not understood how healthy the tourist industry which is the foundation for Zimbabwe’s gambling halls will do in the in the years to come. How many of the casinos will still be around until conditions get better is merely unknown.
