The act of living in Zimbabwe is something of a risk at the moment, so you could imagine that there would be very little desire for visiting Zimbabwe’s casinos. In reality, it seems to be operating the other way, with the crucial economic circumstances creating a higher desire to gamble, to attempt to find a fast win, a way out of the crisis.

For most of the locals living on the tiny nearby earnings, there are two dominant styles of gambling, the national lottery and Zimbet. As with most everywhere else on the globe, there is a state lottery where the probabilities of succeeding are remarkably low, but then the jackpots are also very large. It’s been said by financial experts who look at the subject that most don’t purchase a ticket with an actual belief of profiting. Zimbet is based on one of the domestic or the UK soccer leagues and involves predicting the results of future matches.

Zimbabwe’s gambling dens, on the other hand, mollycoddle the very rich of the nation and travelers. Up till not long ago, there was a very big sightseeing industry, built on safaris and visits to Victoria Falls. The market collapse and associated bloodshed have cut into this trade.

Among Zimbabwe’s casinos, there are two in the capital, Harare, the Carribea Bay Resort and Casino, which has 5 gaming tables and one armed bandits, and the Plumtree Casino, which has just the slots. The Zambesi Valley Hotel and Entertainment Center in Kariba also has only slot machines. Mutare has the Monclair Hotel and Casino and the Leopard Rock Hotel and Casino, both of which have table games, slot machines and video poker machines, and Victoria Falls has the Elephant Hills Hotel and Casino and the Makasa Sun Hotel and Casino, the pair of which has slot machines and table games.

In addition to Zimbabwe’s casinos and the above mentioned lottery and Zimbet (which is considerably like a parimutuel betting system), there are also two horse racing complexes in the state: the Matabeleland Turf Club in Bulawayo (the second city) and the Borrowdale Park in Harare.

Since the market has shrunk by beyond 40% in recent years and with the connected deprivation and conflict that has come about, it is not known how well the sightseeing business which is the backbone of Zimbabwe’s gambling dens will do in the next few years. How many of the casinos will survive till conditions get better is merely not known.
