There is an appealing background to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just across the dividing line from next door Thailand, in which casino wagering is against the law. Eight gambling halls are based in a generally small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime destination, a 3 to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of restrictions requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; still, financing sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and despite the fact visas are allegedly required to pass, there are methods around this, as is real of many borders.
The 1st Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving just a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored barge gambling hall, features 150 one armed bandits and 60 tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long opened. There are 150 slot machines and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slots and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and 66 of the normal table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-around vacation and hotel compound that features a number of amenities aside from the gambling den, which houses 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and eighty eight tables.
