There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling dens that reside just across the dividing line from nearby Thailand, in which casino betting is not legal. Eight gambling dens are established in a generally small location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect area, a three to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest betting locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The amazing income accrued from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a couple of restrictions requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; although, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are ceremoniously open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and even though visas are for all intents and purposes necessary to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is true of most border crossings.
The initial Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary boat gambling hall, features one hundred and fifty slot machines and sixty tables. The Naga casino is open 24 hours with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are one hundred and fifty slots and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slot machine games and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and 96 table games, including eighty seven punto banco (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and sixty six of the normal table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel building that features many luxuries aside from the gambling hall, which houses 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and eighty eight table games.
