There is a fascinating history to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just across the border from neighboring Thailand, in which casino wagering is not permitted. Eight casinos are situated in a relatively tiny area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect spot, a three to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few restrictions requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; although, financial sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 1700, and though visas are supposedly required to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is true of most border crossings.
The initial Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored barge gambling den, features 150 slot machine games and 60 tables. The Naga river boat is open all hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are 150 slot machines and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slots and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and 66 of the normal tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight casinos in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive vacation and hotel building that features numerous luxuries aside from the gambling hall, which provides ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slot machine games and eighty eight table games.
